ESSENTIAL PACKING GUIDE FOR YOUR SAFARI ADVENTURE

When heading on a safari in Uganda, packing wisely is crucial for a seamless experience. Here's an expanded guide to ensure you’re well-prepared for your adventure.

Clothing: Prioritize lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics for warm weather but pack layers for cool mornings and evenings. Long-sleeved shirts and pants in neutral colors are best for protection from sun and insects. A waterproof jacket is essential during the rainy season (March-May, October-November), and sturdy hiking boots are necessary for trekking, especially if you’re planning on gorilla or chimpanzee trekking in Uganda's forests. Bring comfortable shoes for relaxing at the lodges and casual walks.

Footwear: Along with hiking boots for rugged trails, pack flip-flops or lightweight sandals for around the camp or lodge. If you're doing more extensive treks, consider additional socks and foot care supplies.

Insect Protection & Health: Uganda is a tropical country, so insect protection is a priority. Bring high-quality mosquito repellent and consider insect-repellent-treated clothing. A mosquito net is useful, though most lodges provide them. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with high SPF will protect you from the sun during long game drives or treks. Uganda requires proof of Yellow Fever vaccination for entry. Additionally, consider vaccinations like Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Rabies, and pack any prescription medications or malaria prophylaxis.

Safari Gear & Essentials: A good pair of binoculars is essential for wildlife viewing, especially for birdwatchers. A quality camera with spare batteries and memory cards will help you capture Uganda’s remarkable landscapes and wildlife. A daypack for carrying essentials like water, sunscreen, and snacks during game drives or hikes will keep you comfortable and prepared. Don’t forget to pack a refillable water bottle (to reduce plastic waste) and a compact first-aid kit with basics like band-aids, antiseptic cream, and painkillers. Hand sanitizer and wipes are also useful, especially in remote areas.

Technology & Power Needs: Uganda operates on a 240V system with Type G outlets, so bring a suitable travel adapter. A portable power bank is a lifesaver for keeping your camera and phone charged during long days out in the wilderness. Wi-Fi is generally available at lodges, but connectivity may be limited in remote areas, so plan for offline activities like journaling or reading.

Food & Comfort: Pack some snacks like energy bars or nuts, especially for long game drives. While the lodges typically offer excellent food, it's good to have personal snacks for extra energy. Rehydration salts and anti-diarrheal medications are useful in case of mild dehydration or stomach discomfort.

Documents & Miscellaneous: Keep important travel documents, such as your passport, visa, travel insurance, and copies of them, in a waterproof pouch. Consider carrying cash in smaller denominations (Ugandan Shillings), especially if visiting rural areas where credit cards may not be accepted.

With these carefully selected items, you’ll be fully prepared to enjoy the full range of experiences Uganda has to offer, from the jungles of Bwindi to the savannahs of Murchison Falls, while staying comfortable and safe on your adventure.
